Owl and Moon

Owl and Moon

Kristin Shaw

I'm enjoying my journey with Quick Silver Mint. I recently talked with my father about the owl and moon design. My father has spent his life researching ancient symbols and studying art. His house is a treasure trove of art books, history books, spiritual books, and ancient symbols. Some of Quick Silver's pieces are direct designs from ancient symbols. Others are a unique blend of these symbols and his artistic style, creating a interplay of the ancient and the contemporary. The owl and moon are that magic combination.

When I asked him, he explained that he chose to incorporate the waning moon to pay homage to the triple goddess and the divine feminine. In addition, it was important to show the owl's wings, as they are significant to their lore. After our conversation, I decided to dive beyond the website descriptions.

The scientist in me wanted to know first about the owl's wings. The intricate structure of an owl's wings plays a vital role in facilitating silent flight. The edges of their wing feathers are serrated, creating a fringe that breaks air turbulence into smaller currents. This minimizes the noise associated with a bird's flight. Additionally, an owl's wing is covered in velvety downy feathers which absorb sound. These remarkable adaptations grant owls the ability to move through the air with extraordinary stealth, making them exceptional hunters under darkness.

In Greek myth, the owl of Athena is also said to be kept on the shoulder of Athena and reveal truths of the world to her, thus representing Athena's literal wisdom and knowledge in her role as a goddess of wisdom. Owls are also powerful symbols within many Native American cultures. It is worth noting that not all tribes share the same belief, but generally, owls are seen as messengers between realms, often associated with death and rebirth. Adding a moon to the owl connects to the feminine and honors the moon itself. The moon governs natural rhythms and transformation. Quick Silver's design weaves these diverse symbols together, creating a piece that speaks to the passage of time and the eternal cycle of life.

Choosing to wear jewelry featuring the owl and moon is more than a fashion statement. It's a declaration of one's connection to nature's cycles, the wisdom of the night, and the delicate balance between the visible and invisible worlds.
