Dogs have lived and worked with humans in so many roles that they have earned the unique title of “man’s best friend.” With qualities of loyalty, companionship and unconditional love, dogs “really do understand what we are trying to tell them. . . and have a talent for reading social cues in a very sophisticated way.”*

Various studies support the common-sense belief that pets assist their owners physical and emotional health.

An ancient Cherokee story of the “sacred dog of Monterey Mountain” tells of a dog who inspired a couple to built a raft to survive the coming Great Flood.
